4/13/19 - NT @ Ella's House

Welcome to the April meeting of the Nimble Thimbles Quilt Bee!!  Nine members braved torrential downpours and severe flash flooding in order to attend today's meeting.  Thank you to Ella for hosting our meeting!  Thanks to those who brought treats to share for our meal.  We are SEW glad that everyone arrived safely!

Announcements...

Next meeting - 5/11 @ Gayle's NEW House

Show and Tell...

Gayle was anxious to share her Pineapple purchase, so sent an email ahead of the meeting:

Getting there...

... Was a bit of a nightmare (in hazy daylight!)

Live and in person...

There really WAS a road in front of me (I stopped to take the photo) and NONE of that water is supposed to be on either side of the road (even though a closer look at the photo below would have you believe that there's a raging river off to the left!)

Once we all swam to Ella's door and got settled, Show and Tell began in earnest...

Joy started us off with her SECU Table Topper:

Britt brought handwork...

... And the Table Topper that she made for the upcoming SECU Family House event:

Joy also brought along her recently completed On Ringo Pond wall hanging made from Bonnie Hunters 2017 Mystery:

Ella hit the jackpot at the Pineapple SALE!!!  She spent only $70 on ALL of the fabrics shown in the photo below:

Those present got another (closer) look at Gayle's Pineapple purchase.  She's thinking Baby Girl quilts and the pinks were Buy 1, Get 1 FREE, so how could she resist these sweet prints:

Also, some striped prints for bindings, perhaps...

... And a few other pieces of inexpensive (very usable) yardage:

Gayle has nearly completed her "Ella" Donation quilt made with fabrics from Ella's stash:

She changed up the pattern a bit:

It's shown here with Ella's on version of the pattern that Joanna figured out for us all:

Gayle also had a TELL - They've got a contract on the old house!!!  The buyer wants to used the property for a Spa Resort.

Best wishes for a speedy sale, Gayle!!

Britt shared a progress photo of this year's Wildflower of the Year quilt for the North Carolina Botanical Garden:

Lynda shared her newest Kaffe book that she found on Amazon for $18, all because Gayle sent an instagram photo of this quilt:

Here's a close-up:

If I remember correctly, Gayle is going to make this one:

Darn, my cryptic notes!!  These are Lynda's fabrics:

Gayle's quilt will be from this book:

I'm pretty sure Lynda's will be from this one:

Lynda had a TELL - She is close to finishing the first panel of her Sue Spargo quilt and is starting on the second one.

Hmm... I wonder if this is Ella's next quilt:

Sewing room shot showing intense curiosity over the Kaffe books:

Ella shared her nearly completed Bunny Quilt:

Dee Dee started these Artist Trading Cards on baby wipes and dryer sheets.  Some have Peltex as a base.  One even used "starter/stoppers" that were found under her sewing table on a recent clean-up!  They were glued down and stitched over.  Such darling little mini quilts:

She also used some flamingo fabric to make an Eyeglass Case:

Dee Dee brought a sample of her Giant Tulip block for a donation quilt for a teen girl:

Linda had a TELL - She needs to put the binding on a baby quilt and needs to finish her SECU Table Topper.

Here she is smiling, even though she's going in for a bit of surgery in a week:

Barry is a quilter, but Ella won't let him join our group:

Candy shared her completed Blooming 9-Patch quilt:

Ruth B. shared her SECU Table Topper:

Then Joy asked for a group photo of the completed ones:

Here they are, thus far:

These are the ones made from Pineapple Fabrics charity donation:

Ruth B. brought along her "Ella" donation quilt, in progress:

Here is a larger view of the quilt top:

Ruth B. showed us the pattern (Magic Triangles) that she plans to use for her son's new quilt.

She plans to use her collection of black and white prints:

Backing and binding, perhaps:

Additions from the Pineapple SALE:

This egg plate had a story, but I didn't manage to write it down.  Make sure you ask Linda for the details:

Joy came away with a bag of Pineapple remnants from Gayle...

... A bag of scraps from Ella...

... And two big scrap packs from Dee Dee:

Thank you for feeding my addiction, ladies!!  I've already begun designing a quilt with Dee Dee's leftover pieces and parts!

Until next time...

4/11/18 CCLQ at Ella's

Welcome to the weekly meeting of the Cherry Creek Lane Quilters!  This week eight quilters met at Ella's house. When one enters Ella's home, just like Ruth S's home, one quickly knows that a quilter lives here!

Be sure to read the entire blog.  Today we had a special treat...Ella shared her quilting history and showed us her first quilts. Everyone was delighted! Ella suggested that when we host, we do the same. So dig deep and find those first quilts folks! Now for a look at some of Ella's more recent quilts lovingly displayed in her home.

This is one of Ella's stunning quilts in her dining room.
Doesn't this trio of Ella's appliqué quilts remind you of spring?

Here's Candy's beautiful Blooming Nine Patch quilted by Joy.  Candy used premade binding from Pineapple fabrics. Candy is sewing a sleeve on the quilt today.  It will go to a friend who plans to hang this wonderful quilt in her home.

Ruth B has completed the top of her Ella Fabric Donation Quilt.

Deborah shared a new issue of a quilting journal: Curated Quilts.

Curated Quilts will feature Black and White Quilts in their tenth issue.  Submissions are open August 1st and the deadline for submissions is August 31, 2019.  So you have time to make a black and white quilt that may go in a magazine.  Any style or technique is welcome.

DeeDee challenged our group to participate in this Black and White challenge by making a small 8/5x11 BW quilt!
DeeDee found this 100% linen dress at a thrift shop.  She plans to cut it up to make another garment.
Check out this amazing collection of 4x6 inch fiber art pieces created by DeeDee for the Original Works Art Quilt group.
DeeDee made these wonderful pink flamingo eye glass cases.
DeeDee made this fun quilt for the Sleep In Heavenly Peace organization. Volunteers make bunk beds for children who do not have a bed.  DOQ is providing donation quilts for this wonderful project. Joanna quilted this quilt.

Close up of awesome quilting by Joanna!
Lynda shared a spectacular collection of Kaffe Fassett fabrics and some of KF's books.

For an colorful and comprehensive collection of Kaffe Fassett fabric check out:  gloriouscolor.com.
This book featured stunning quilts.
More books and of course fabric!

Lynda showed this book, Quilt Grandeur by Kaffe Fassett at Gayle's last week and here's a quilt that Gayle wants to make!
Tip of the week:  Lynda shared this pen that helps with making a fold in fabric.
Click on this link to find out more about how this pen works.
Ruth S plans to make a Blooming Nine Patch quilt this summer.  She found these wonderful fabrics at Pineapple Fabrics last week.  The quilt is for her daughter.

Ruth S plans to use this layout for her Blooming Nine Patch quilt. Sorry about the horizontal view:(

Ella's quilt history.....

When Ella lived in Vermont, her mother would send her quilts. One day her mom said, "It's time for you to learn to quilt Ella."  Her mother sent this quilt top and Ella quilted it by hand. Ella had a 66 year old friend who asked, "Why did you baste it first?" She thought Ella's stitches were too big.
Close up of Ella's beautiful first hand quilting stitches...our group didn't think the stitches were too big.

Ella's first quilt from start to finish!  A variation on Storm at Sea made while she lived in Vermont.
Ella's excellently pieced second quilt.
Ella's third quilt called Yuki's Garden. The center blocks are folded like origami.

Another view...
This quilt by Ella was made in Kansas for a library fundraiser and won first place viewers' choice for appliqué.
Close up of the appliqué sailboat and the incredible quilting!
Ella is currently working on another beautiful donation quilt from her stash.

Ella suggested that we start a trend of having a quilt history by the host of our meetings.  Everyone thought that would  be a fun idea.  Thanks Ella for sharing how you started your quilting journey.

Until next time, happy quilting!
