8/17/2023 CCLQ @ Gayle's

Welcome to the Cherry Creek Lane Quilters weekly meeting.

After talking about the latest storm outages the group shook off the weather and did a bit of show-n-tell.

Maggie had a tell about donating a 1950's machine to an afghan refugee family.  3 of the 5 children of the family are going to be in school soon and Mom thought she wanted to learn to sew.  I consider her wonder women for attempting this with 2 little ones at home.

Linda's tell was about an inspiration flash in choosing what her fabrics will be for the Sampler Round Robin to start on Nov 2nd.   We're all Going for a ride on the wayback machine to the 1930's.

Candy made a Kindel cover for a friend and has plans for both a runner QAYG and a baby donation.  This is after she does some of the hexi coasters that she is using the Hex N More ruler for.

Carol has 4 blocks for the Vetrans donation bed quilts the Tuesday Group is working on.  She has come up with a wonderful use of her Family vintage hankies.   Starching, folding, and stitching produces a Butterfly from each hankie.  Utube Hankie Butterfly block
Finally she shared a scrappy baby blanket that will be getting the binding over the next few evenings.

Ruth had a question for the group about sashing strip size.  She is almost done with all the blocks and has started to try out sizes 2.5 or 1.75

DeeDee did the big reveal of the child's quilt top she put together after collecting the group blocks.  What a wonderful feeling we each got by participating in the project.

Joy joined us for a bit before she headed to work.  She shared her 22 day journal that is almost done.  She and Britt joined a Messy Art Journal group and were surprised to find Maggie's Daughter-in-law Sarah is a member.  Although she didn't bring them she sent photo's of the latest quilted baskets.  She does take a little time from journaling to quilt.

Gayle's sewing mojo is back.  She created an original top from some stash Tula Pink charms.  Imagination and a queen bed to layout a design is going to make someone very happy.

Deborah was not with us but shared a photo of the memory quilt top that is for a friends daughter.

That's it for this week.

Thank's to Gayle for the goodies and hosting.

  • A good day is a day spent quilting.

8/10/23: CCLQ at Maggie’s

Welcome to the weekly meeting of the Cherry Creek Lane quilters!  This week the quilters met at Maggie’s house.  Lots of wonderful show and tell and some more resources for fabric and quilting tools. Everyone was excited to see the star blocks for our group donation quilt! There were several questions about the upcoming Round Robin. Please refer to the PDF that Maggie sent via email on 7/6/23.

What a lovely quilted table topper for the delicious snacks provided by Maggie.

Everyone admired the colorful hexi- coasters made by Maggie. Check out the pattern for these scrappy coasters .

The Big Reveal! Here’s the splendid star blocks for our donation quilt.

Several fabrics were auditioned for the sashing. DeeDee will work on making the sashing and assembling the quilt.

DeeDee is participating in a project to make blocks for Quilts of Valor. This is a string quilt block sewn on a muslin backing shown below.

Carol is having fun making mug rugs and table runners for her family as gifts for Halloween.

This is a cute table runner.  Check out the close up of the happy embroidered spiders below.

Cool Halloween fabric for the back.

DeeDee also shared this book with lots of ideas for using panels in quilts.

Carol quilted one of the Halloween quilts for her grandkids.

Cheryl did a nice job quilting the bird quilt.

Cheryl’s neighbor gave her more fabric.  Cheryl may make a blue and white quilt.

Linda was happy to report that she got a set of shelves put up in her spare room and is making progress getting her sewing room organized.

Ruth had a fun week with her grandson. They went to the zoo and the Lego exhibit.

Lynda finished the blocks for the Cashmere Garden quilt and began a search for backing fabric.

Lynda found this luxurious fabric at Fig Leaf Quilting in Colorado. She reported this company had excellent customer service and sent photos of the fabrics that might work for backing.

Maggie shared the blocks that she prepared for her son and daughter-in-law’s wedding reception.

The blocks

Maggie selected these pens to use for writing on the blocks.
Maggie tested several pens..Sharpie, Micron, and Gelly Roll pens.

She washed and dried the sample fabric and the Gelly Roll pens worked the best.

These Pentel Gel Roller pens can be used to mark fabric.  Yellow can be used to mark dark fabrics.

Maggie framed this poster for the wedding quilt.

Another good tip from Maggie…she ironed freezer paper on the back of each block to make it easier to write upon.

Candy reported that her shower is finished!  She also found the Mulberry Silks gift card that was given to her by her realtor.

Deborah shared that the memory quilts were shipped on Wednesday morning. It was a relief to complete this project on time!

There were several questions about the upcoming Round Robin. Maggie created a very thorough set of directions which would be good to print out. If you want to use specific patterns, please include in a notebook in your bag. One suggestion was to put patterns in a vinyl sleeve. If you want to leave the block design open…that’s OK…each quilter can choose and create a block for you.  If you have specific parameters, please write them down, e.g. size of unfinished and finished block, color limitations, or specific block patterns. If you miss a meeting when the bags are exchanged, it’s OK.  We will work it out. The blocks or perhaps finished quilt top or quilt will be revealed at the end! This will be exciting!!!!

Until next time, “Creative people don’t have a mess. They have ideas lying around everywhere.” Unknown

This will be the backing for the quilts.
