3/18 - NT @ Candy's House

Welcome to the March meeting of the Nimble Thimbles Quilt Bee!!  This month we were hosted by Candy.  There were 10 members present, sadly, Ella wasn't able to stay very long.  :o((

On a good note, we were greeted by Candy's granddaughter.  :o))

Unfortunately, I was so mesmerized by the small silver slippers and the toddling steps that I forgot to snap a photo.  :o((

With the small one on her way to Raleigh, the meeting got underway...

Dee Dee started us off with a bit of business to discuss.  . .

Switching with Gayle for this year's Dye Frenzy!!!

5/13/17 @ Gayle's
6/17/17  @ Dee Dee's (with Gayle doing geli printing, Britt and Jean doing stamping, and Dee Dee doing the dyeing portion, if I understood correctly.)

Oh, look...

Joy was all decked out for St. Paddy's Day:

Once that was all ironed out, Britt shared a portion of her most recent Art Quilt:

The stamp was made out of Fun Foam adhered to a bottle cap:

Jean joined in with more of the artsy stuff, including a stamp made on an old CD cover...

... Along with shapes on a jar lid:

THIS is the resulting Dragonfly Wall Hanging:

After that, Show and Tell began in earnest...

Jean recently completed a Cardinal Wall Hanging:

HERE is a close-up of the light blue "made paper" and the dark blue quilted with Superior Hologram thread:

Carol brought three quilts for Gayle to quilt:

A Missouri Star Quilt Co. pattern using match pairs of HSTs:

The orientation of that HST pairs form these diamond-like shapes:

Springy random 9-Patch blocks with Snowball corners:

Another one of her sweet "little girl" quilts:

Carol is making this quilt for her grandson:

He chose the Star Wars fabrics:

That 8 year old designed the back of the quilt:

Dee Dee created this Table Topper completely from stash:

Even the Hobbs black 80/20 batting was a leftover bit:

The "Saturday Girls" wanted a look at the Journal Cover that Deborah made her for her birthday:

The gift worked magic to get Dee Dee out of the slump that she's been in... she's made 4 sketches, done some painting, and made that quilt that we just saw!!

Here is a shot of the inside of the Journal Cover:

Linda completed the top of the Presto Change-o quilt that she was laying out at our Family House Sew Day:

The quilt will be given to her great niece who is having surgery next month.  Linda plans to quilt it on her home sewing machine and finish it in time the surgery.

Candy declared that Lilly was her show and tell, but then she shared her new Wonderfil Thread.  It was purchased at Quilt Con:

The Canadian company makes a variety of threads, but this 100 weight thread is GREAT for ditch quilting and machine applique.

Ruth was hoping to have something to share, but was interrupted.

TELL:  Ruth completed the bag that she was making for Rachel, but forgot to take a picture before mailing it off.  :o((

She did show us the progress she has made on her "busy work" applique quilt.  She is having fun with it:

TELL:  Ruth bought a page of instructions at Quilt Con.  Quick HSTs using strips to make many at a time.

**  It was pointed out that the resulting HSTs would end up with bias on the outside of the blocks.

Gayle (apparently) overbought when collecting the Paula Nadelstern panels for the 18 decorative balls that she made last year!!  With the leftovers from that project, she made this magnificent 110 x 110 quilt:

Here is a close-up of one of the blocks:

It was a tough act to follow!!  People were getting hungry and broke make lunch preparations.  That's all well and good, but there was one more bit of Show and Tell...

Joy shared her two RED blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge:

THIS is the tutorial that she is using for the Scrap Jar Stars blocks:

Joy also shared her completed Police Quilt top:

While she's happy now, she will be even happier when it's quilted, done, and delivered:

With that done... Bring on the FOOD!!!

Oh, but look!!  Here is an unexpected quilt sighting at Candy's house... one of her beautiful little Couched Quilts tucked into a shelving unit display:

We enjoyed a delicious meal with a number of Mexican-themed items.  Along with the food, we enjoyed an easy conversation in each other's company.

Miscellaneous News:

Candy told us that Mary Jo of Mary Jo's Cloth Store passed away on Thursday at the age of 85.  (She worked until she was 80!!)

Someone (Jean?) mentioned that Thimble Pleasures Quilts can be found on Facebook.  Julie is selling shop samples.

Per Carol, Cheryl B.'s longarm was out of commission for several months, she's had the flu TWICE, and it's piano competition season.  We may see her again in June!

Per Jean, Ruth S. finished quilting a baby quilt and (according to her email) it looks GREAT!  She is on the way to Florida.  The binding is on and will be stitched down during the trip.

REMINDER:  Please let Britt know what YOU plan to do concerning April's NT Shop Hop.

Many minutes went by and we could delay our departure no more.

HERE is what Britt did NOT bring for Show and Tell...

One quarter of her En Provence Mystery:

Until next time...

Go hang out with your quilt buddies!!!

3/16/17 CCLQ @ Candy's

Welcome to the day before St. Patrick's Day meeting of the Cherry Creek Lane Quilters. This week seven lucky quilters met at Candy's home. Candy served homemade blueberry bread!

Remember the quilted sketchbook cover from last week?

Well....DeeDee got her mojo back and has been busy decorating the pastedown and free end papers of the sketchbook with colorful stamping and an inscription.  Very cool!

Here's what DeeDee has done so far in the sketchbook! Inspiration for quilting and art abounds!

A delightful hummingbird sketch and seed pod are illustrated here.

DeeDee was also working on a repair on her yard work shirt.

Here, DeeDee showed a strip of hour-glass blocks she sewed together as a beginning for a small quilt she's making for her night stand.

Ruth S was sewing the binding on a donation quilt from the Tuesday group.
Ella showed this awesome quilt made by Barry and quilted by Joanna.

Barry stitched the star in the middle of the quilt.

Close up of one of the stars...look at those points and look at the radiating quilting!  Well done Barry and Joanna! Everyone suggested this quilt should go in the NC Symposium show.

This is a lovely donation quilt made by Ella.  Joanna also quilted this one.
Close up on the quilting on the back of Ella's quilt.

Joanna was busy sewing the binding on the modern quilt she showed last week.  This one will go in the NC Symposium Show.

Ruth B was working hard on her landscape quilt using embroidery to embellish.
Candy was sewing the binding on this Quilt of Valor donation quilt.

Deborah shared this Wonderland fabric from Rifle Paper Company. Deborah purchased from Fat Quarters Shop.com .  This fabric will be made into a pillow for her grandson.

The group enjoyed a delicious lunch at Asian Harbor Restaurant in Mebane, NC.

Until next time....."Good friends are like quilts.  They age with you, an never lose their warmth."

3/9/17: CCLQ @ DeeDee's

Welcome to the weekly meeting of the Cherry Creek Lane Quilters.  This week's meeting was at DeeDee's home and guess what?  It was also DeeDee's birthday! 🎂  Eight quilters attended today's meeting and we had lots of fun!  Britt joined us for lunch at Vinny's Italian Grill.

Happy Birthday DeeDee! DeeDee made delicious gluten free brownies and I don't know where those candles came from.

We all joined in for a chorus of "Happy Birthday to You!"

Look at DeeDee's collection of  beautiful quilts cleverly displayed on a ladder.

DeeDee created this wonderful collage...so happy and reminding us... here comes springtime!

Joanna has completed this stunning modern quilt using  Karla Alexander's Stack-Shuffle-Slide Technique. Joanna plans to enter this quilt in the North Carolina Quilt Symposium.

Ruth S revealed the name of her new Bernina..."Savannah." Ruth reported that Jean is a great teacher!  Ruth has made wonderful progress learning to use her new machine.

Ruth has made two baby quilt tops with "Savannah:"  here's the first one.

Here's the second one. Way to go Ruth!

Jean was busy today cutting out Willie's to use as appliqué on some special project.
Jean showed this delightful wall hanging that she made for the son of a friend who passed away.
Close up of the cardinals....

Jean printed this wonderful saying for the back of the quilt.

DeeDee shared this creative piece made by stamping fabric with paint. Everyone is looking forward to the Dye-A-Thon coming up May 13th. We will get to make and use stamps to create fabric.

What is a "trash can quilt?" DeeDee confessed that this piece has been in the trash four times! The group agreed...this piece is not trash can worthy. Thread paint it! As Tim on Project Runway would say..."Make it work!"

More trash can quilts!  Oh no DeeDee..don't toss it! Jean said to use a rotary cutter and make lots of strips.  Jean offered to loan DeeDee her Viking machine to sew this fabric into shape!

Looks like this piece of fabric will go in the trash....

DeeDee received a birthday gift... a new quilted sketchbook cover from Deborah.  Fabric is from Mulberry Silks in Carrboro.
A look inside the sketchbook cover...pockets for storing pens and other drawing tools and a sketchbook!

Ruth B is making a bag for Rachel.

Close up of the cool fabric lining inside the bag...

Cheryl and Ruth B delivered the police support quilt to the Carrboro Police Department. This quilt was made by Ruth.

Cheryl and Ruth B delivered the police support quilt to the Chapel Hill Police Department. This quilt was made by Cheryl.

Jean shared this link to the Chatham County Sheriff's Department Facebook page where you'll find photos of Jean presenting the police support quilt to the Sheriff along with a wonderful post about the police support quilt.

Jean shared this personal thank you note for the police support quilt from Sheriff Roberson.

Only a couple of police support quilts left to deliver.  Deborah is waiting on the newly designed patch from the UNC Police Department. Joy will let us know when she delivers her quilt to the Hillsborough Police Department.

Candy used her new invisible thread from Wonderfil Threads  to repurpose a jacket and shirt for her son. The clothing had the logo from a former company he worked for...now it's a Tarheel fan jacket and shirt.

close up of the patches....
Candy showed some hologram thread, available from Wonderfil and Superior Threads.  Hologram thread gives your work a glow or a little glitter.

Ella shared that she is making a scrap lap quilt and plans to quilt it with feathers.
Another show from DeeDee...she made these large sofa pillows using Kaffe Fassett fabric and sewed a zipper in the side.

Everyone takes a look....nice work DeeDee.  Hey...where'd you get the pillow forms?  Kohls

Sewing tip of the week....this one from Jean...put some batting in the bottom of a box and your tiny squares stay more organized. Spools of thread don't roll around as much on this surface too.

Spring is near...look at this beautiful Flowering Pink Almond in DeeDee's yard.

Seven quilters including Britt had lunch at Vinny's.

Until next time...have sew much fun!
