2/17/18 - NT @ Carol's

Welcome to the February meeting if the Nimble Thimbles Quilt Bee!!  This might surprise you, but we were at Carol's house... And it's not even Christmas!!  Not only that, but there were THIRTEEN of us in attendance. With so many chatty quilters, it was a challenge to bring everyone around to the business at hand.

An announcement...

Candy wanted to remind everyone the we have a tab at the top of our blog home page for our Specialty Ruler Lending Library.  Shop the library before you buy a one-off ruler that someone in our group already owns!  If YOU have specialty rulers that you are willing to loan to group members, please send a list to Joy.  Thanks!

And Show and Tell...

Margaret was the first to share.  She used a specialty ruler that she has owned for 10 YEARS!!  That Rapid Fire Petite Hunter's Star ruler has FINALLY fulfilled its destiny.  Here is the (scrappy) quilt top to prove it:

NOTE:  Jean has a Large Hunter's Star ruler to add to the "library."

Margaret also made this Attic Windows Quilt using a panel:

** There's a trick to cutting off a half inch from one side of the "panes" to continue the image as if it was hiding behind.

She also finished this Sherpa fleece quilt for her nephew.

** Here is a tutorial for a reverse effect using Minky.

Carol has been working on her own Row Quilt:

** Rail Fence, Stars, and Cowboy Boots will be added to the quilt for her next door grandson.

Helena had a sad TELL.  Her father passed away last week.  It was the day before his 93rd birthday. He lived a long, full life, but she will miss him.  A memorial service will be held in a few weeks, so she was able to be with us today.  (Our condolences, Helena.)

Cheryl B. brought a tin of stars to show how many she has made using Deb Tucker's Rapid LeMoyne Star ruler in the 3" size:

She sang the praises of the ruler:

Oh!  Just one more look at those tiny stars:

She also shared another MIL Quilt.  It was already a quilt top.  Cheryl added the borders and used upholstery fabric on the back since that's what she had on hand:

Cheryl B. then showed off her completed Jinny Beyer quilt made from a Craftsy Kit for her 2nd daughter:

Here is a wider view of the quilt:

Gayle is a new Bonniac.  She has fallen in love with the (scrappy) work of Bonnie Hunter.  This is her interpretation of Jamestown Landing:

** The quilt is not full size and she didn't use the String Block background that Bonnie did.  She used a Jelly Roll that she purchased at Pineapple Fabrics... TWO WEEKS ago!!  The backing fabric was in her stash and PERFECT for the quilt.

Britt has been bitten by Joy's Basket Bug.  Here is the Thread Catcher that she made from the off-cuts from her Neutral Basket:

She has also completed the top of the CCLQ Thomas Fire relief quilt that she assembled in quadrants:

** Britt found the perfect backing in her stash.  What luck!!  (She showed it, but Joy missed taking a photo.  Sorry, Britt!)  Cheryl B. has volunteered to quilt it for the Cherry Creek Lane Quilters.  :o))

Jean has a new addiction.  Applique using the Embroidery Module on her Bernina:

She's taking a 6 week (?) class and there are a number of options for finishing.  Today she was working on trimming the pieces for her next set of blocks:

Dee Dee shared her Original Works group Ice Dyeing using procion dyes:

Question:  Any plans?
Response:  Not yet.

She went on to talk about how the colors are dependent on the wringing out of the soda ash and length of time left in the dye pot:

Dee Dee worked on binding this Donation Quilt:

** The quilt was made using 5.5" squares and 2.5" strips.  It's easy to make any size you would like!

Ruth S. completed her Crazy Quilt Template Quilt:

She started this quilt at a 2017 Family House Sew Day using all the stitches on her new machine.

Ruth's summer house is called The Tree House and this will hang in the stairwell.  She did the free motion quilting on this herself:

Ruth B. brought the Churn Dash blocks that she is making from 2 y.o. Shop Hop fabrics.  This quilt will be for her bed:

Joy has been on a Quilted Bowl kick.  She made this one for the sister of one of her Knit Group friends:

This one, made from scraps mailed from a fellow blogger, belongs to her and features an interior made from one of the FQs received in the 2016 NT "Dirty Santa" Fat Quarter Exchange:

Candy showed off the completed table runner that she started at our last SECU Sew Day:

To make a Table Runner for an extra table in her living room...

Here is a closer look at her sample block:

... Candy attempted the Tangles Table Runner pattern:

Candy also had a TELL:  Lilly  now sleeps with the pillow that she recently (Dec 2017) made for her using the leftover blocks from one of the quilts Candy had previously made for her.  :o))

Linda had a TELL, too.  She moved the ironing spot to where Joy suggested.  It has to be moved when she goes out the back door, but she can get into her bedroom easier now.

She passed around a picture of the quilt she finished for great niece:

Here is a reminder of what that quilt looked like prior to binding:

Once Show and Tell was over, everyone moved into the kitchen where lunch was served.  What a feast we had!!  You would have thought that this was a Holiday gathering.  LOL!

After lunch, the chatter continued for quite some time...

... With multiple conversations going on at once:

Thank you for hosting us so soon after last time, Carol!!  It looks like a different house and felt more than a little odd NOT to see decorations everywhere we looked.  Thanks also to everyone who contributed to our meal.  It was DE-lish!!

Disclaimer:

All the information is there... except for our discussion of 100 wt. Superior Microquilter thread.  I know that it's like Candy's Wonderful Invisafil and that Suzanne Desarres bought it in every color because she loves it that much!  Other than that, I'm not real sure the exact context, but I think Ruth S. might have used it for her quilting.

Until next time...

CCLQ at Joanna's 2/8/18

The CCLQ quilters met at Joanna's house for a lively morning of quilt sharing.
Yummy gluten free brownies started our morning off right. Delish!

Gayle showed a fast technique for making HSTs.  She was working with a jelly roll and this method (sew along both sides, fabric right sides together) went very fast and required no trimming up. This was a real bonus for the HST quilt she's working on.  Note you have bias edges with this method so starch your fabric or handle with care to avoid stretching.

Both Ruth B. and Joanna had fabrics to share (photographer was busy pawing over them, no photo). And Joanna showed off the hilarious business cards meant for Ella to give to Barry. He's is an excellent quilters' handy man for many of us -now he has the cards to prove it!

Deedee showed a nine patch swap that had languished for a while. Time to get the blocks trimmed up and ready to use!

Then the photographer got distracted laying out the Thomas Fire donation quilt blocks in another room.  Oops!! But there were multiple projects in planning stages.

Deborah and Cheryl both have baby quilts on their minds.

Candy showed her lovely table runner, now quilted!

And Ruth S shared Joanna's quilt which she was binding.

Cheryl Breeze joined us and showed another quilt top made by her MIL (or grandMIL) which she quilted with upholstery fabric on the back. Good use of stash fabric to create a backing!

And her spectacular quilt with Jinny Beyer fabrics. This one is for a daughter (and my guess is the CCLQ gang is lining up to be adopted!).

Some closeups

Britt showed a quilt meant for her littlest niece in New Zealand.  The top will first make a stop at Grandma's house for a few embroidered flowers (to keep a tradition going that mother and daughter work on niece/nephew quilts together), then back to Britt for quilting. She also completed a second large basket - here's what it looked like in the early stages.

Then we checked out Joanna's design wall to see how the Thomas Fire quilt was progressing. We tried out some of the fabrics the group so generously donated to act as a border. Looking good! Britt laid out the design this way...

But meant to lay it out like this! Slight change, but much better.
