7/18/19: CCLQ at Joanna's

The Cherry Creek Lane Quilters met this week at Joanna's home. The current heat wave has generated a burst of creativity for the quilters in this group.  Stay tuned for Joanna's reveal of her mystery quilt and a link to a pattern to make a quick and easy reusable grocery bag from Ella.  Read about our discussion on what batting to use for a microwave bowl cozy and see DeeDee's wonderful Original Works Challenge quilt, quilt designs for happy feet, and much more!

Joanna always has beautiful quilts on display.

Joanna's delightful Stonehenge quilt is finished.  Joanna needed to make this quilt bigger and used Margaret's "Quilt As You Go" method to add extra borders.
The big reveal.....Joanna's stunning mystery quilt top is complete.
Joanna's sister's 25 year old house dress needed revitalizing. Joanna created a new denim dress and appliquéd the existing designs for a dress that should last for 25 more years! Joanna attached a photo of the old dress for comparison.

Gayle was excited to show her new iPhone !

Gayle finished this colorful quilt for her son's birthday.
Here's the backing and the quilt label.
Gayle's quilt was immediately chosen as the favorite quilt by the "happy feet" of our Jr. Quilter.
More happy feet even as Gayle folded up the quilt!
Ella showed some lovely reusable fabric grocery bags. Pattern is available  from Shabby Fabrics.
Ella also made some wonderful Christmas Tree napkins....pattern also from Shabby Fabrics.
The Christmas napkin is made of a half circle.
DeeDee is a member of the Original Works Group. The challenge for this month was "money." DeeDee created this unique money plant quilt design for the challenge.
Everyone loved DeeDee's interpretation for this challenge!
Margaret showed her scrappy Quilt As You Go (QAYG)  quilt.  Margaret will do a demonstration of this technique at the September DOQ meeting.
The back of the QAYG quilt shows off Margaret's cool quilting design.

Deborah is working on quilting the mystery quilt from the Bluff trip (last September)....it's about time Deborah!
Ruth has created a pile of materials to make microwave soup bowl cozies.  She started the discussion about what's the best batting to use in these cozies?  Some batting scraps that have scrim may have a polyester component that's not safe in microwaves.  The group generally agreed that 100% cotton batting is safe and that one shouldn't heat these covers more than 4 minutes. Some people have used Pellon's WrapNZap.  For more information on making microwave bowl covers, check out this link.   This link has a FAQ section about soup bowl cozies with answers to a lot of our questions.
Lynda started the appliqué for this block.

Lynda has been working on collecting the materials she needs for these three new blocks for her Forest For the Trees quilt by Sue Spargo.

Joy went to a "sew craft frenzy" with Britt.  She made blocks for two donation quilts, buried threads on a quilt and played with scraps.

Until next time, happy quilting!
