5/16/15 - NT @ Candy's

Welcome to the recap of this month's Nimble Thimbles meeting!!  Thank you to Candy for hosting (and to Britt for being prepared to host, if needed.)  Thanks to everyone who brought treats to share.  We had quite a feast!!

There were 8 of us in attendance and once everyone was settled (this took quite some time!) we started right in on everyone's favorite portion of the meeting...

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Tuesday, May 26th, 6:30 PM @ Hillsborough Library

Saturday, June 20th, 10 AM @ Dee Dee's Dye Frenzy (supply list to follow)

SHOW AND TELL:

Here's a look at what everyone has been working on....

Candy had a TELL:  She is going to a new shop in Oley, PA next week (on the way to her sister's in NJ.)  For her SHOW:  Two convergence quilts.  One done in 2 colors:

And one done in 4 colors:

She also requested that those of us who are in the Thursday Group bring Baby Quilt Books to the meeting as she is GOING TO BE A GRANDMOTHER!!!  Congrats, Candy!!!

Dee Dee shared some of her very cool gelli prints:

She also had a print done on a circular gelli plate on dyed fabric, then a different color stenciling followed by purple that was applied to clean out her paint brush:

These were made "as a project just to do for fun", but Margaret suggested that she used them for the pocket of a purse.  (Which others thought was a good idea.)  Dee Dee thought she might use them for her nature series or something or in her NC Wildlife Quilt that she is "building."

She brought along the bag that she embellished using art journaling techniques.  She will be using it as a watercolor to go kit for stamps, stencils, and related tools.

Then she showed her Quit of Valor (QOV) quilt:

The QOV above was made using Bonnie Hunter's Star Struck pattern, but Dee Dee used only TWO colors and 3.5" strips for her quilt.  Follow the link to see what a difference it made!

Britt brought the Patriotic Donation Quilt, but she will be adding on a zig zag border:

She also showed us the progress that she has made on her Bonnie Hunter Mystery (but this is her version as she didn't end up following the mystery quilt instructions for putting the top together!):

And shared her design plan:

Candy brought out the quilt pattern that she likes to make (that uses a similar construction.)

Joy showed the different quilt tops made BEFORE and AFTER using Margaret's Lil Twister template on her Twisted Sixter Table Topper (and then passed the packet to Ella):

a sample "before" quilt top

the "After" version once the twister template is used

Margaret gave some advice regarding the use of fusible...
Don't use Heat -n- Bond, if you plan to stitch through the applique!!!  Unless you LIKE dealing with gunky needles.  :(

She shared the Patriotic Donation Quilt top that she started at the last DOQ Sew Day.  The pattern uses WOF strips of material and goes together REALLY FAST!  (sorry about the less than stellar photos - this really is a very cool quilt!)

Margaret also had a Layer Cake Quilt the squares were cut and had a strip of another fabric inserted.  Next the block was bordered on 2 sides and you alternate the block orientation.

She was working on the binding of a Baby Quilt for a baby that has arrived:

Linda brought a block from her Dance of the Dragonfly Quilt.  She took the class at Wish Upon a Quilt with her SIL a couple of weeks ago and is making good progress on it:

It is being made in Aritsans Spirit - Shimmer fabric by Northcott.

We also saw her daughter's college graduation quilt:

It's a queen sized BQ quilt done in Asian prints and quilted by Cheryl Breeze.

Ruth B. was working on making little HSTs  that will be sewn into pinwheels that will be sewn into larger blocks.  She bought a selection of fabrics while at Mary Jo's.

She is going to be having The Summer of Grandchildren and inquired about what she might make with her 10 year old grand daughter.  The group came up with a number of ideas that might work nicely.

Ella was working on a Donation Quilt made from stash that she is trying to get rid of.  The pattern is 3 Bean Salad and she bought the fabrics when she lived in Kansas... sometime between 2001 and 2006.  (I guess it has "aged" sufficiently!):

Not bad!!!  Almost everyone brought something!

At the end of Show and Tell, we went into Candy's sewing room to have a look at how her commission quilt to coming along:

And then took a field trip next door to see the wall on which the quilt will live.  The colors were chosen to go with some original artwork in the room:

RECIPE REQUESTS:

Dee Dee - Jelly Plate

Ruth B. - Chick Pea Citrus Salad

Candy - Shredded Chicken Casserole

Until next time...
Quilt on!!!
